Reading Star Trek: Vanguard "Storming Heaven" by David Mack (ISBN:978-1-4516-5070-9), a book series from Simon&Schuster set in the TOS timeframe and revolving around a deep space StarBase (starbase 47, aka "Vanguard") in the no-man's-land between Klingon, Romulan, Tholian, Gorn and Federation borders. New bit players just mentioned near the start of the book (pgs 42-43), subordinates to Dr. Carol Marcus in a major clandestine research effort, are Drs Hofstadter (a 'dark-haired bespectacled researcher') and Koothrappali. So far no dialog from them, just little "easter eggs" for the reader. Got quite a laugh, but nobody at home who'd appreciate it that I could share it with....
