George Marshall Cooper Sr. is the late father of Sheldon Cooper, George Cooper Jr., and Missy Cooper and late husband of Mary Cooper. He has been described by Sheldon through most of The Big Bang Theory as an almost-redneck, "Homer Simpson" Texan.

Biography[]

George Cooper was born on June 10, 1944, in Galveston, Texas, to Mr. and Mrs. Cooper. His parents had an unhappy marriage. He played for the football team in high school, where he claimed to not be a good player but was still bigger than the other kids. He got injured in his senior year and thus never got to achieve his dreams of playing in the national leagues. After high school, George enlisted in the army, a move which led to him fighting in the Vietnam War. During his time in the military, he met Mary Tucker and had gone to a bar. Later that night, the pair had sexual intercourse while intoxicated, resulting in Mary getting pregnant with Georgie. To avoid a scandal, the pair got married shortly after. George eventually got a job working as a football coach to help support the family. The family were later joined by twins, Sheldon and Missy, who were born in 1980. Previously, George had coached at another high school in Galveston, before being forced to move after reporting a recruiting scandal, leading to him being fired and forcing the family to move. The family settled in Medford, where he got a job coaching at the local high school.

Series Overview[]

The Big Bang Theory[]

When Sheldon was 12, he did a series of experiments involving the height of stairs. He increased the height of some stairs by 2 millimeters and as a result George tripped and broke his clavicle ("Pilot").

Mary claims that he wasn't so wise and once tried to fight a bobcat for some licorice. Sheldon claims that his father used to make him watch and play football, since it was popular in Texas, despite Sheldon's lack of interest in it; however, the learning of the sport gave Sheldon something to know about other than science. His father was a high-school football coach.

His twin daughter and son: Missy and Sheldon Cooper

George also taught Sheldon how to cook meat as if it were chicken, and archery (which gives Sheldon a smell of K-Mart bourbon whenever he plays it, implying his father was drinking while teaching) and how to shoot close enough to a raccoon that it "craps itself."

TSR-11

His son George Cooper Jr., who was named after him

He also claimed that his father and mother had an imploding marriage as they fought almost all the time, which traumatized him a lot when he was a child. It turns out that he hated the name Sheldon and only named him that for his wife.

Sheldon once mentioned Missy gave their father a "World's Greatest Dad" coffee mug, suggesting that his sister got along with their father better than he did. Sheldon went on to describe George's parenting skills as "coasting 'til the day he died" where as now that we've seen George in Young Sheldon, that may not be fully the case even though you can see why he said that.

Old Mary Cooper

His widow Mary Cooper

In "The Cruciferous Vegetable Amplification," Sheldon created a simple family tree that indicated George had died at the age of 42 and that his cause of death was "S.B.L." Sheldon provided no explanation as to what that acronym stood for.

Old Mary Cooper

His widow Mary Cooper

In "The Rhinitis Revelation," Mary said to Penny, "You take notes, darlin'. The real way to get a man is with melted cheese and cream of mushroom soup. He'll die at 50, but his love will be true." It is unclear if this was a reference to George and/or George's cause of death.

In "The Weekend Vortex", Sheldon claims that his dad told him, "Shelly, women are nothing, but flipping pains in the bottom"; however, Sheldon said he lightened it up and it's possible that what he really said was "Shelly, women are nothing but frickin pains in the ass".

In "The Fish Guts Displacement", Sheldon tells Amy that his brother would sneak into George's truck and drink his driving whiskey.

In "The Egg Salad Equivalency", while dealing with Alex Jensen asking Leonard out he quote his father: "My father used to say that a woman is like an egg-salad sandwich on a warm Texas day." Using his father's philosophy about women, he gets in trouble with Alex and the Caltech Human Resources Department.

In "The Raiders Minimization", Sheldon says that his mother would put hamster poop in his father's tobacco when he used to drink.

In "The Thanksgiving Decoupling", Sheldon told Bernadette's father that his father died when he was 14. He also admitted his father made him watch football games before he let him do his homework and during the 1993 Thanksgiving game in Dallas, he was so angry with the results he shot his television. Sheldon also admits he never got to share a beer with his father, though his father did try when he graduated high school, but his mother wouldn't let him because he was eleven. Also, when he died the man who owned the local liquor store cried for a long time, suggesting he was a regular customer.

In "The Proton Transmogrification", when Sheldon is talking to the recently deceased Arthur Jeffries (a.k.a Professor Proton) in his dream, he brings up the past 11 Doctor Who's, Pop-Pop, as well as his father, as the most important men in his life (aside from Arthur himself) who are now gone forever.

In "The Comic Book Store Regeneration", after the gang receives the bad news that Howard's mother died in her sleep, Sheldon surprisingly gives Howard some words of comfort: by stating "When I lost my own father, I didn't have any friends to help me through it. You do." These words caused Howard to smile as Sheldon could relate to his grief while surprising the others with his understanding.

In "The Maternal Combustion", Mary says that one time when she was going to church while pregnant with Sheldon, she prayed that her son was smarter than his dumb-ass daddy and she saw a bobble-head of Jesus in the next car nodding yes.

According to a story that Sheldon told Penny in The Hot Tub Contamination, when Sheldon was 13-years old and on spring break from college, he came home early because the school had run "out of math to teach me." He said his mother was at bible study, and he walked into the house, expecting to find it empty. He heard a sound coming from his parents' bedroom and opened the door to find George "having relations with another woman." Sheldon offered this story as the reason for his signature knock (he described the first knock as a courtesy. while the second and third knocks were to give folks a chance to "put their pants on"). However, this event should have occurred - but did not occur - during season 6 of Young Sheldon, so it seems that Young Sheldon will disregard this continuity point. but on season 7, it was revealed on Ants on a Log and a Cheating Winker that Mary was cosplaying a woman named "Helga” to which Sheldon mistook for another woman, but the episode and Sheldon’s story has different parts which was never explained.

In "The Brain Bowl Incubation", Leonard revealed that Sheldon's father once picked a fight with a cactus.

In "The Sibling Realignment", Sheldon's brother Georgie told him that, after their father died, Georgie was the one who had to take care of everything and look after Mary and Missy. After learning the truth, Sheldon apologized to his brother - one of the few times where Sheldon expressed empathy for others.

Just before Sheldon's wedding, he said he was missing his father. Mary also said she wished George could see Sheldon and that he would have been proud of Sheldon. (The Bow Tie Asymmetry)

In "The VCR Illumination", after Leonard found the Russian paper that said Super-Asymmetry was not worth pursuing, both he and Amy got very depressed. Leonard located an emergency VHS tape made by Sheldon when he was eleven. His character from "Young Sheldon" tried to give him a pep talk, but it was recorded over by his father with one of his football games. Amy kept watching it and ound his father's halftime pep talk, which helped Sheldon. His father told the team that they wouldn't win that game, but that that did not make them losers. They could learn from failure as much as they could learn from success. This encouraged Sheldon, and he even thanked his dead father in the end. His father's wise words gave him and Amy inspiration beyond the grave, leading them to a Nobel Prize.

Young Sheldon[]

In Young Sheldon George is the head football coach at Medford High School. George does not share Sheldon's intellect, sometimes leading others, especially Meemaw, to doubt him being Sheldon's father. However, he is often the voice of reason for Sheldon. Though he may struggle with understanding his intellectually-gifted son, he is a loving father and has defended Sheldon on multiple occasions, earning Sheldon's love and appreciation. He and Mary have marriage problems that lead him to cheat on her and they almost get divorced. He reconciles Sheldon's fear of ghosts after his classmate Nell dies mysteriously, when Sheldon presumes the girl is haunting him. His father dismisses this as superstition and this further embellishes Sheldon's love of science, fact and logic.

Contrary to Sheldon's memories in adult time, he is no alcohol-abusing Texas redneck, but he does drink a lot. He teaches Sheldon everything about football and supporting Missy playing baseball in the boys' league. When he was younger, he went on a date with Mary, afterwards having sexual intercourse. She got pregnant, forcing both of them to marry. He is often teased by Meemaw because she feels he is not good enough for her daughter.
